Shiozawa Area – Karuizawa Taliesin & Musee no Mori

Scenic Autumn Drives – Onioshidashi Park

Formed by lava flows from Mount Asama’s great eruption in 1783, Onioshidashi Park is a dramatic landscape of rugged volcanic rock.
The park is also home to Asamayama Kannon Hall, a branch temple of Kan’ei-ji in Tokyo’s Ueno district.
Wander through the fascinating lava formations and discover the powerful history of the eruption, with plenty of scenic spots along the way.
The drive itself is part of the experience, offering magnificent close-up views of Mount Asama.

Scenic Autumn Drives – Megane Bridge

Officially known as the Usui No. 3 Bridge, Megane Bridge was built in 1892 to connect Yokokawa in Gunma Prefecture with Karuizawa by rail.
As Japan’s largest brick arch bridge, it stands as a remarkable example of Meiji-era engineering and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The former railway line was also home to Japan’s first Abt rack railway system.
Admire the impressive arches from below, or walk along the former railway route and across the bridge, following a scenic trail that takes approximately one hour.
A must-visit for railway enthusiasts and history lovers, the bridge is especially beautiful during the autumn foliage season.
